CS Alternator Conversion (cont'd)
Finally, a few images that should clear up some questions that are no doubt developing.  Here's what you buy...an alternator for a '1988 Fiero 6 Cylinders 173 9 2.8L FI'.  In my 1986.5 the year didn't matter.  Specify 5 slot pulley!
Yes, it does fit even though it is for an '88.
It really is smaller.  Installing is easier than removing the old one.  The size differential isn't drastic, but it does help.
Just the alternator all sides.  Note voltage regulator location.  A full 180* different.
The mounting holes on the new CS series are 6.5" apart as needed.  Case depth from face of pulley to rear of battery cable stud 5 7/16".  Installed there is 3/16" more space surrounding the new smaller alternator.
How does it perform?  I tried to bog it down at low RPM...1000 +/- 50rpm with headlights on, all doors open, deck lid up, heater blowing on Hi, stereo cranked (neighbors loved that), hazard lights on, and yes, the overhead lights on as well.  Basically if it draws power I had it on and the car idling.  The new one was still charging at just under 14.5 volts and holding steady through the rpm range.  Charging with no load on the system, as noted above, was .1 volts higher.  Not too shaby considering the lights were flashing faster than ever before.  Yes, the voltage meter still jumps when turn signals are on, but not nearly as hard.  Successful, yes.  Worth it...oh yeah!
